bunny run

built as a speculative home by Becky Fuller, this Alter Studio designed home was centered around the pool space.  modern was tasked with designing a pool that had interesting views from every angle and functioned as well as it looked for the future family.  ultimately the simple shape chosen creates a seamless transition with the house, and when necessary the pool transforms shape to isolate the spa and heating it within 30 minutes of summoning the spa using your phone app... perfect when making a last minute decision to "hop in the hot tub"...

Sweet Sky

built by modern pools & designed in collaboration with Dick Clark, the pool was built substantially out of grade and allows a secret subterranean passageway to yoga, zen, and play spaces nestled below the pool and into the trees. The Juniper Ridge site consists of six private lots on a cul-de-sac street with the Sweet Sky Residence at the end of the street with direct greenbelt access.

The Sweet Sky Residence, located in the heart of Westlake Hills represents one of the last Dick Clark hands-on designs before his passing in 2017. Renowned Austin architect Dick Clark is often referred to as the Godfather of contemporary design. This home is designed on two levels, in a linear "L" shape to allow the main spaces to spread out more evenly across the site in the natural direction of the topography. The result is a house built "into" the hillside with views maximized off the back patio facing conservation land and canyons. The

the Terminal swimming

Built in 1949 this unique house was designed and built by one of the most well-known and accomplished architects ever to call Austin home.  Arthur Fehr.  modern was able to re-model a new pool shape in the same location as the original, making it feel as if it was always there.  The surviving Fehr family visited the site after the remodel and were amazed at how much Arthurs taste would have aligned with that of the "modern" family living in their childhood home.

the Terminal

Built in 1949 this unique house was designed and built by one of the most well-known and accomplished architects ever to call Austin home.  Arthur Fehr received his degree in architecture from UT in 1925 and began working for an architect in San Antonio, followed by a year in New York and a tour of Europe.  During the Depression he helped with survey and restoration work of one of the missions in San Antonio, and then was hired as park architect for the National Park Service.  He was assigned to Bastrop State Park, and for three years he designed, supervised and participated in the construction of all the structures there, working with the Civilian Conservation Corps, as well as nearby Buescher State Park. During this time he met a kindred spirit in Charles Granger, newly graduated from UT, who briefly worked as his assistant and would later become his business partner.  In 1937 he resigned and opened his own practice in Austin, where his first commission was the First English Lutheran Church.   By this time he was beginning to pull away from his traditional training toward modernism.  An admirer of Walter Gropius and the Bauhaus, he emphasized craft, economy of construction, the use of readily available materials and functional design.  The first of his efforts to be published in a national magazine was the St. Elmo-Tel, on the highway to San Antonio south of Austin.  It was an early example of what would be the hallmark of Fehr and Granger’s work in the post-war years:  a spare and “industrial” look, admitting abundant light and ventilation, and treating economy of construction not as a limitation but as another design element.  It was important to use local materials and local craftsmen, as well.

Storyline of the home as written by historian Marty Moulthrop

Arthur and Mary Jane Fehr lived in this house until his death in 1969; his widow remained here until the 1990s.  The current owners acquired the property in 2010 and affectionatly named it "the terminal" refrencing Aurthurs architectural roots. Beyond paint and needed repairs, they decided to wait three years before undertaking any remodeling, so as to get the feel of the home.  The old retaining wall around the pool was falling down, so they replaced the pool and developed a flat play yard below.  As remodeling has progressed, they have been careful to replace stone with stone, wood with wood, etc.  Original steelwork has been exposed and the built-ins have been preserved.  The original 33’ sliding doors looking out to the pool have been repaired and asbestos tiles have been removed from the bathrooms.   They have also removed a hedge and AC unit to expose the graceful cantilevering of the house over its foundation.

The Fehr house is being brought back to life by new owners sensitive to its history and style.  Surely Arthur would approve!

falcon point lodge

Overlooking historic San Antonio Bay, Falcon Point Lodge is the focal point of Falcon Point Ranch which boasts over 6,000 acres of unspoiled salt marsh, brush, and wooded wildlife habitat. In 1685, French explorer La Salle described the area as a camping ground for the Karankawa Indians. The land was later settled by the Spanish, with the first land grant going to Spanish impresario Don Martin de Leon in the early 1800s. Since that time the land has remained in private hands and is now open for the first time to a select few. Falcon Point Lodge’s luxury accommodations, fine dining, private lounge, and high-tech conference facility provide the perfect base of operations for outdoor enthusiasts wishing to experience truly memorable waterfowl and wild game hunting as well as excellent fishing in a unique Texas Gulf Coast environment. geode | art in public spaces

The urban park known as the Northwest Greenway will be a gathering place for the young and old. People walking to work, head- ing to the nearby train station and children on their way to the hospital for a check-up will all be participants in the space. Understanding this,

by Hunter Cross

I propose a work of art that uses recycled materials to captivate the viewers both during the day and at night.

My work is designed to appear as an enormous geode whose crystals are built of recycled green glass gathered from a local vendor. These crystals will be tumbled and smooth to the touch. The work will be backlit with LED lights so that it is lit from within and slowly throbs on and off starting at dusk every night. My hope is that the work will appear natural and spark the imagination of the community that ends up calling

by name. Having community mem- bers say “Meet me at the Geode” would illustrate that the work had finally been woven into the fabric

of the urban park and accepted as a landmark. The mimicry of natural beauty and the creative use of color and light has always been a part of my work. Further, I am hoping that this work creates questions about art’s relationship to nature and our responsibility for maintaining a sym- biotic relationship with the natural beauty that surrounds us.
